President Biden's effort to fill the top job at the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has collapsed after Republican Senator Ted Cruz helped sink his nominee, Denver airport CEO Phil Washington. Acting Administrator Billy Nolen, a former airline pilot who led the FAA’s safety office, has already gotten a public endorsement from Cruz, who predicted during a hearing this month that he would “get confirmed quickly.” However, Nolen would not represent the clean break from industry dominance at the FAA that Biden had promised with his original nominee.
