Billerud paper mill faces deadly Blastomycosis outbreak.

Billerud has idled its Escanaba paper mill and started deep cleaning after 21 confirmed and 76 probable cases of blastomycosis were reported in employees, contractors, and visitors. The mill has more than 800 employees, and a minimum number of people are coming in to keep the mill in working condition. The source of the blastomycosis is still under investigation, and those infected are being worked on for workman's comp. Billerud is working with authorities to find a solution and is still on track for its billion-dollar investment into the Escanaba mill.

Fungal Outbreak at Michigan Paper Mill Claims Life of Worker.

One person has died and nearly 100 people have been infected in a fungal outbreak at a Michigan paper mill. The outbreak was caused by a fungus called blastomycosis, which spreads through the inhalation of spores. The paper mill has temporarily suspended operations for up to three weeks for the safety of its employees and contractors. The fungus is typically found in the areas surrounding the Great Lakes, as well as the Ohio, Mississippi and Saint Lawrence rivers.

Michigan paper mill temporarily idles operations amid blastomycosis outbreak investigation.

Billerud has temporarily idled its Escanaba mill for up to three weeks as a precautionary measure to protect the health and safety of its employees and contractors due to a blastomycosis fungal infection outbreak. The company will facilitate additional cleaning of the facility based on recommendations from NIOSH and other organizations. To date, there have been 21 confirmed cases and 76 probable cases of blastomycosis among Escanaba Mill workers.
