Berlin Zoo's Giant Pandas Return to China

The Berlin Zoo has sent its first giant pandas born in Germany, Pit and Paule, to China after a delay caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The 4-year-old pandas, also known as Meng Xiang and Meng Yuan, arrived at their new home, the Chengdu Panda Base, after a flight on an Air China cargo jet. They will undergo a 30-day quarantine period before joining the panda population. While the pandas were popular attractions in Berlin, their return to China was part of the original agreement. Giant pandas have difficulty breeding, making their births highly valued.

Elephant's Self-Taught Banana Peeling Skill Amazes Researchers and Internet

Pang Pha, an elephant at Berlin Zoo, has become the subject of a scientific study due to her unusual ability to peel bananas with her trunk. Researchers were impressed by her speed and technique, which involves a "break and shake" method for perfectly ripe bananas. Pang Pha was handraised by a keeper who always fed her peeled bananas, which may have influenced her behavior. Another elephant, Mara at Brazil's Global Sanctuary, also peels bananas and hands back the leftover peel.

Self-Taught Elephant Masters Banana Peeling

Pang Pha, an Asian elephant at the Berlin Zoo, has taught herself to peel bananas using her trunk, a behavior that she only engages in when the fruit is at the right level of ripeness. Scientists suspect that she learned the habit from observing her caretakers peel bananas for her. While some experts are not convinced that this is a case of observational learning, the behavior highlights the dexterity of elephants' trunks and their ability to manipulate objects.
