Nine victims, six survivors after Tahoe-area avalanche
An avalanche near Castle Peak in the Tahoe area of California on Feb. 17 killed eight skiers and left one missing and presumed dead, with six others surviving after sheltering in tarps. A rescue operation involving about 46 personnel recovered the survivors, and authorities note it is the deadliest U.S. avalanche in roughly 45 years.
