Uncovering the True Cause of Vertigo
Vertigo is a sensation of disequilibrium caused by impaired function of the balance mechanism in the ear. There are various causes of vertigo, some more readily treatable than others. Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV) is caused by small crystals of calcium in the semicircular canals sending false or distorted messages to the brain. Serous otitis media is caused by the accumulation of fluid behind the eardrum due to blockage of the Eustachian tube. The "pinch and blow" Valsalva manoeuvre can alleviate this condition.
