Stefanchuk holds talks with Azovstal supporters in Turkey.

Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Ruslan Stefanchuk met with the defenders of Azovstal steel works in Turkey on behalf of President Volodymyr Zelensky. A team led by Head of the President’s Office Andriy Yermak works daily to return all Ukrainian prisoners of war home. 215 Ukrainian defenders were released, including the Azovstal Regiment commanders, within the framework of the prisoner exchange in September 2022. Five Azov Regiment members have stayed in Turkey under the personal guarantees of protection and security of President of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

He experienced first-hand the day the final square of the besieged city fell and now recalls it with both deep sadness, but a sense of purpose for Ukraine’s future. More than 700 remain in captivity: winning their release has been a priority for the Ukrainian government, and for Vershinin, who was in a group exchanged for Russian prisoners of war last fall.
