Atlanta City Council to Vote on Controversial Public Safety Training Center Funding

Hundreds of people gathered at Atlanta City Hall to voice their opposition to the funding of a public safety training center, dubbed "Cop City," ahead of a vote by the Atlanta City Council. Opponents argue that the project is a waste of resources and that the funds should be invested in affordable housing, healthcare, and education. Councilmembers will vote on whether to transfer $31 million to the Atlanta Police Foundation for construction of the facility and $1 million for a gym. The rest of the funding would come from the APF, which is a private nonprofit.

Rising Kia and Hyundai Thefts Cause Concern in Cities.

Car thieves are targeting Kias and Hyundais nationwide due to a missing anti-theft device, causing an 830% increase in auto thefts involving these cars this year compared to last year. Atlanta City Council members are concerned about the increased cost incurred from responding to the high spike in car jackings. Former City Councilman Antonio Brown is scheduled to be sentenced this week on a single count of bank fraud. Atlanta officials are still awaiting a decision from the White House on whether or not the city has clinched the coveted title of hosting the 2024 Democratic National Convention. Former Congressman and Atlanta City Council member Kwanza Hall has been appointed to the Development Authority of Fulton County’s Board of Directors.
