A new study from Imperial College London, published in the European Respiratory Journal, reveals that beetroot juice supplements can lower systolic blood pressure and improve exercise capacity in people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The study showed a reduction of 4.5 mmHg in systolic blood pressure over a 12-week period and an increase in the distance subjects could walk in six minutes. Beetroot juice is rich in nitrates, which elevate nitric oxide levels, aiding in blood vessel relaxation and potentially enhancing athletic performance. While the findings are promising, individuals are advised to consult with their healthcare provider before starting any new supplement regimen.
