Jan. 6 defendant receives record-breaking 14-year sentence for assaulting police during Capitol riot
Peter Schwartz, a man who engaged in a series of assaults on officers during the Jan. 6 attack, has been sentenced to 14 years and two months, the longest sentence for a Capitol rioter yet. Schwartz, who has 38 prior convictions, was armed with a wooden tire knocker and threw a folding chair at the line of officers protecting the Capitol’s Lower West Terrace. He also used chemical munitions, including pepper spray, against officers. Schwartz will also be under 36 months of supervised release and must pay $2,000 to the Architect of the Capitol in restitution.
