Supreme Court upholds Illinois ban on assault weapons
The Supreme Court rejected a request to block state and local laws in Illinois that ban assault-style weapons, including AR-15s and AK-47s, and "large capacity ammunition feeding devices." The decision comes after a series of fatal shootings in the US. The state law, called the Protect Illinois Communities Act, was passed in response to a mass shooting in 2022. Gun rights supporters argued that the bans violated their Second Amendment rights, but the court found that the laws are "consistent with the Second Amendment's text, history, and tradition."
