"Mexico's Army-Run Airline Set for September Launch with Civilian Flight Attendants"
Mexico's army-run airline, Mexicana, is set to launch in September 2023, but unlike other army-operated sectors, the flight attendants will not be soldiers. The airline will lease 10 Boeing 737-800 jets from the manufacturer, which will also provide pilots and cabin crew. Mexicana aims to offer flights between Mexico City and various Mexican cities, as well as tourist destinations like Cancun. Ticket prices are expected to be 18% to 20% lower than private competitors, but profitability remains uncertain, potentially requiring government subsidies. The new airline combines President López Obrador's preference for state-owned companies and his reliance on the armed forces. Mexicana may also support the president's Maya Train tourism project by providing feeder flights.
