Mexico's Army-Run Airline Set for September Launch with Non-Military Flight Attendants

Mexico's army-run airline, Mexicana, is set to launch in September, but unlike other sectors under the army's command, the flight attendants will not be soldiers. The airline will lease 10 Boeing 737-800 jets and hire pilots and cabin crew from the manufacturer. Mexicana plans to operate 20 potential routes between Mexico City and various Mexican cities, as well as tourist resorts. Ticket prices are expected to be 18% to 20% lower than private competitors, but profitability remains uncertain. The new airline combines President López Obrador's support for state-owned companies and his reliance on the armed forces. Mexicana may also support the president's Maya Train tourism project.
