Pets Transmitting Drug-Resistant Superbugs to Humans: New Research
New research presented at the ESCMID Global Congress indicates that pet dogs and cats can transmit antibiotic-resistant bacteria to their owners, raising concerns about the spread of deadly superbugs. The study found evidence of multidrug-resistant bacteria being passed between sick pets and their healthy owners in Portugal and the UK, highlighting the need for improved hygiene practices and comprehensive monitoring in pet-owning households. The findings underscore the importance of including pet-owning households in national programs that monitor levels of antibiotic resistance and recommend practicing good hygiene to prevent transmission.
