Multiple Fires Aboard USS Abraham Lincoln and Ingalls Shipbuilding Under Investigation

A fire broke out in the amphibious assault ship Bougainville, which is still under construction at Ingalls Shipbuilding. Two shipbuilders were transported to the hospital for smoke inhalation, while four others were treated on-site. The cause of the fire is under investigation, but initial findings suggest that hot work being performed nearby may have ignited flammable materials. The fire and smoke were contained to a small number of compartments, and no damage to the remainder of the ship or the shipyard was reported. Bougainville is the third America-class amphibious assault ship and was originally expected to deliver to the U.S. Navy in fiscal 2024, but the delivery date has been pushed to October 2025.

US and South Korea conduct joint military drills amidst North Korean missile testing.

South Korean and US troops are conducting their largest amphibious landing drills in years, involving a US amphibious assault ship, the USS Makin Island, which docked at a naval base in Busan on Wednesday. The drills, called Ssangyong, will last until April 3 and involve 12,000 sailors and marines from both countries, as well as 30 warships, 70 aircraft, and 50 amphibious assault vehicles. The exercises come a day after North Korea tested four long-range cruise missiles and are aimed at building "muscle memory" to respond to a crisis if needed.
