Jeff Webb, Architect of the Modern Cheer Empire, Dies at 76
Jeff Webb, founder of Varsity Spirit, built a multibillion-dollar cheerleading empire by creating the camps, competitions and governing bodies that dominate the sport; by 2004 Varsity claimed ~90% market control and over $150 million in revenue, and it was later sold for $1.5 billion with Webb leaving in 2020. He then led the International Cheer Union and pushed for Olympic recognition, despite antitrust lawsuits accusing monopolistic practices. Webb died at 76, with Varsity Spirit announcing his death and the International Cheer Union citing a tragic accident causing a severe head injury. He is survived by his wife and children.
