Americans Express Concerns Over A.I., High Interest Rates, and Economy, CNBC Survey Reveals

A CNBC All-America Economic survey reveals that a large majority of Americans have strong reservations about the emergence of artificial intelligence (AI). Only 27% of respondents are comfortable with the development of computer programs that mimic human thinking and potentially replace human activity. This represents a 10-point increase in discomfort since the last survey in 2016. The survey also found that majorities in all demographic groups are now uncomfortable with AI, including professionals/managers and the 18-34 age group. Americans express discomfort with AI in areas such as customer service, medical diagnosis, and self-driving cars. However, there is no widespread concern about job loss to robots, with 21% believing AI would make their job easier and 18% thinking it could replace them. The survey raises questions about the potential for industry regulation and the need for more education about the benefits of AI.
