AI Replacing Videogame Illustrators in China.

AI image generators are replacing human videogame artists and illustrators in China, leading to job losses and lower wages for those who remain. AI programs like Midjourney and Stable Diffusion are getting better at creating convincing artwork, forcing illustrators to adapt in ways they aren't thrilled about. The Chinese videogame market has had a rough couple of years, with a government licensing freeze causing an industry-wide job crisis. While some game developers say they won't totally substitute human artists' labor with AI, the technology has allowed them to cut costs.

"Which Jobs Are Safe from AI and How Much They Pay"

Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania have identified 34 jobs that AI could never do, including electrical power-line installers and repairers, athletes, and pile-driver operators. These jobs have no tasks that could be done by artificial intelligence. The top-paying position was electrical power-line installers and repairers, with a median annual salary of $78,310. However, many of the identified jobs had relatively low wages, such as bartenders and cafeteria workers. The researchers also predicted that jobs in finance and software, such as securities and commodity contracts, have the most exposure to AI. The researchers calculated that 15% of tasks across all jobs could be done faster by AI with no decrease in quality, with that number jumping to somewhere between 47% and 56% if the AI were paired with specialized software and tooling for specific applications.

The Rise of ChatGPT and Its Impact on the Future of Work

A study by OpenAI and the University of Pennsylvania found that up to 80% of the US labor force could see at least 10% of their work tasks affected by AI language models like ChatGPT, with educated, white-collar workers making up to $80,000 a year being the most affected. Jobs in the information processing industries, like IT, are most exposed to generative AI, while jobs in manufacturing, agriculture, and mining are the least exposed. The study also found that workers with bachelor's, master's, and other professional degrees are at high risk of exposure to AI.
