An 81-year-old man in Oklahoma was attacked by a swarm of Africanized bees while mowing his yard, leaving him with a broken hip and over 200 stingers in his body. The bees continued to sting him for nearly three hours before he was rescued and taken to a hospital where staff removed the stingers. The man is in good spirits but faces a long road to recovery.
Six people, including an 8-year-old girl, were killed by a swarm of Africanized bees after a bus they were riding in plunged into a ravine in Nicaragua. The bus disturbed a hive of the deadly insects, causing the passengers to be repeatedly stung. The Africanized honey bee is considered far more dangerous than single-breed honey bees because they react to disturbances 10 times faster and can sting up to 10 times more. The incident left a further 14 passengers severely injured.
