Rising Snowpack Increases Mosquito Population and West Nile Risk
Mosquito season is expected to be worse than usual due to heavy rains in Southern California, creating more breeding sources for mosquitoes, including the invasive Aedes species that can spread diseases such as dengue fever, Zika, and chikungunya. Residents are advised to take charge of their yards by keeping plant saucers dry, pet water dishes clean, and not overwatering plants. Rotational fans and EPA-certified bug repellents are recommended to deter the ankle-biting Aedes. The experts said Aedes rarely feed on birds, which is how West Nile virus is spread, but residents should still be vigilant and prevent mosquito habitats.
