Telly Ships Free Ad-Supported 55-Inch TVs, But Beware the $1,000 Penalty

Telly, the free TV company, has begun shipping its ad-supported 55-inch TVs to its first customers. The TVs feature a smaller screen dedicated to displaying advertisements, and users must agree to have their viewing data used by advertisers. Telly plans to ship 500,000 TVs by the end of 2023 and "millions more" in 2024. The company is also partnering with Nielsen, Microsoft, Magnite, and MNTN to collect viewership and ad effectiveness insights. While users sacrifice some privacy, the appeal of a free TV has attracted a significant number of sign-ups.

Ad-supported TVs: The Future of Streaming?

Ilya Pozin, co-founder of Pluto TV, is reportedly working on a new company called Teevee Corporation that plans to give away free ad-supported TVs with a second built-in screen dedicated solely to ads and a soundbar. The TV will not be a smart TV and will bundle in existing streaming dongles. The built-in screen will display ads and various widgets that show the weather, news headlines, and sports scores. The Teevee site states that something is "coming later this year."
