Katherine Koonce, the head of Nashville's Covenant School, ran towards the sound of gunfire during Monday's mass shooting at the private Christian elementary school, according to a city councilman. Koonce was one of six people killed by the shooter, who fired through the school's glass doors to enter the building. The councilman said Koonce had sought advanced-level active-shooter training, which saved countless lives. The other victims were three 9-year-old children, a substitute teacher, and a custodian. Police shot and killed the shooter inside the school just minutes after they arrived at the scene.

A 28-year-old woman opened fire at a private Christian grade school in Nashville, killing three children and three adults before being fatally shot by police. The shooter was armed with "at least" two assault rifles and a handgun and was at one time a student at the school. The school had held an active shooter training program last year. President Biden called on Congress to pass his assault weapons ban in response to the shooting.
