Sacramento County has experienced a significant increase in Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) permits, which are becoming a potential solution to the housing crisis in California. ADUs are tiny homes that can be built on existing properties and used as in-law suites or rental units. The surge in permits is attributed to high rent and the need for more affordable housing. Two bills are awaiting approval that could further boost ADU construction. Sacramento County alone saw ADU permits nearly triple from 2021 to 2022, with 237 units completed last year.
