Britain has reached a substantial compensation settlement with Abu Zubaydah, the Guantanamo detainee subjected to CIA torture, amid allegations that UK intelligence services helped facilitate his mistreatment. The payment is underway but not yet accessible to him, and campaigners say his ongoing detention and call for release and accountability remain urgent.

Abu Zubaydah's Drawings Reveal US Torture Policy

Abu Zubaydah, a detainee held in Guantánamo Bay who was used as a human guinea pig in the CIA’s post-9/11 torture program, has created a series of 40 drawings that chronicle the torture he endured in a number of CIA dark sites between 2002 and 2006 and at Guantánamo Bay. The drawings, which Zubaydah has annotated with his own words, depict gruesome acts of violence, sexual and religious humiliation, and prolonged psychological terror committed against him and other detainees. Last week a UN body called for him to be set free immediately, finding that his ongoing detention may be a crime against humanity.

U.N. demands release of Guantánamo prisoner tortured by C.I.A.

The UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention has called for the immediate release of Abu Zubaydah, a prisoner at Guantánamo Bay who was the first detainee waterboarded by the CIA after the 9/11 attacks. The group also found a pattern of potential crimes against humanity in other cases at Guantánamo over the past 15 years. Abu Zubaydah has been held without charges since 2006 and has been denied a meaningful review of his detention. He was tortured by the CIA in a secret prison in Thailand. The US has argued that he helped jihadists reach Afghanistan for training before the 9/11 attacks.
