Pope Francis recovering well after abdominal surgery.
Pope Francis is recovering well after undergoing surgery to correct an incisional hernia at Rome's Gemelli Hospital. The lead surgeon, Dr. Sergio Alfieri, said that the Pope is awake, alert, and already cracking jokes. The surgery was successful, and there is nothing preventing the Pope from continuing with his planned travels to Portugal and Mongolia in August. The conditions treated by the surgery were both benign and have been resolved. The Pope had been experiencing pain for several months due to the hernia, which may have come about following past operations he underwent in Argentina.
