
TSMC Announces Second Chip Factory in Japan with Sony and Toyota Backing
TSMC plans to build a second fab in Japan through its subsidiary JASM, which will produce chips on 6 nm and 7 nm-class process technologies, making it the most advanced semiconductor production facility for logic chips in Japan. The new fab, located adjacent to JASM's upcoming fab in Kumamoto Prefecture, will increase capacity to over 100,000 300-mm wafer starts per month by the end of 2027. The investment in the new fab exceeds $20 billion, with ownership divided among TSMC, SSS, DENSO, and Toyota.
