HBO Max Drops 4K Streaming and Concurrent Streams for Legacy Subscribers

Warner Bros. Discovery's streaming service, Max, is removing 4K Ultra HD movies and TV shows from its standard ad-free plan, limiting the resolution to 1080p and reducing the number of simultaneous streams from three to two. The 4K content will now be available only in Max's Ultimate Ad-Free plan, which also offers Dolby Atmos support and up to four concurrent streams. The changes will take effect from December 5, 2023, and the subscription price will remain the same.

HBO Max Launches with Over 1000 4K Movies and TV Episodes.

Warner Bros. Discovery's new streaming service, Max, will offer over 1,000 movies and TV episodes in 4K at launch, including popular titles such as Game of Thrones, Harry Potter, and The Lord of the Rings trilogy. Max will support both Dolby Vision and HDR10 for content where those formats are available, and Dolby Atmos audio will also be included for select movies and shows. The service has three subscription plans, with the Ultimate plan offering up to 4K UHD resolution and 100 offline downloads for $19.99/month. HBO Max subscribers will still have access to their current plan features for a minimum of six months following launch.

HBO Max successor Max introduces new subscription plans and 4K pricing.

HBO Max is rebranding as Max and will offer three subscription plans: Ad-Lite, Ad-Free, and Ultimate. The new plans will have some slight changes in how they're packaged and what's offered, but all plans will grant access to the full Max library. 4K content will cost $20 per month on the Ultimate plan. Discovery Plus will remain a standalone streaming service, and there are no announced bundles for customers who would like subscriptions to both Max and Discovery Plus.

YouTube TV Price Hiked to $73/month Due to Content Costs

YouTube TV has increased its monthly subscription price from $65 to $73 due to rising content costs. The 4K content add-on has been reduced from $19.99 to $9.99 per month. YouTube TV allows up to six people in the same household to use the service, and it includes unlimited cloud DVR storage. The service offers more than 100 channels, with add-on subscriptions for premium networks like HBO Max and STARZ. Existing members will see the price increase on April 18.
