Apple's 2024 MacBooks and iPads with 3nm chips face uncertain demand

Apple plans to release new MacBooks and iPads with 3nm chips in 2024, but demand for the devices might be "below expectations" due to a "lack of growth drivers," according to supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. The decline in MacBook and iPad shipments in 2023 is attributed to the end of work-from-home demand and diminishing user appeal for new specifications. However, the next iPad Pro models featuring OLED displays could be a growth driver. Kuo does not expect any new MacBooks or iPads to be released until the end of 2023.

"Apple's iPhone 15 Pro to Benefit from TSMC's Defect-Free 3nm Chips, Saving Billions"

TSMC, the chip supplier for Apple, is reportedly not charging the tech giant for defective 3nm chips ahead of the launch of the iPhone 15 Pro. This is unusual as TSMC clients typically have to pay for all the dies, including defective ones. Apple's large orders allow it to absorb the cost of defective chips, helping TSMC fund research and development for new nodes. Additionally, Apple's orders enable TSMC to improve and scale up production more quickly. Once production issues are resolved, TSMC can demand higher prices from other customers and charge for defective dies.
