Nebraska Upholds 12-Week Abortion Ban Amid Election Decisions

Nebraska voters have decided to uphold a 12-week abortion ban, rejecting a competing proposal that would have allowed abortions until fetal viability. This decision, which will enshrine the ban in the state constitution, comes amid a broader national debate on abortion rights following the U.S. Supreme Court's 2022 decision to overturn federal abortion rights. The 12-week ban allows for some exceptions and permits lawmakers to impose further restrictions. The campaign to maintain the ban received significant financial support from Nebraska Republican U.S. Sen. Pete Ricketts and his family.

The Political Battle Over Abortion Bans in North Carolina.

Republican lawmakers in some states have started coalescing behind bans that allow most abortions to continue, a reaction to the sustained political backlash to abortion restrictions that has been mounting since the landmark decision in June. The 12-week bans have so far only passed in two states — North Carolina and Nebraska — but the proposal has gained traction with some national antiabortion groups who say they’re supportive of restricting abortions as far as a state can. However, the approach has drawn sharp criticism from others in the antiabortion movement, who argue the 12 or 15 week bans don’t do enough to stop what they see as widespread murder, allowing more than 90 percent of abortions to continue.
