Hungary's Block on E.U. Aid to Ukraine: Implications for European Integration

Hungary has blocked the European Union from approving a financial aid package for Ukraine, despite the EU leaders agreeing to officially open accession negotiations for Ukraine to join the bloc. While this is a significant breakthrough for Ukraine, Prime Minister Viktor Orban of Hungary objected to the aid package, stating that it should be extended only after Europe-wide elections planned for the summer. The EU leaders will reconvene next month to try to reach unanimous agreement.
