Maldives resort pioneers sustainable waste management with 'Sustainability Lab'

The Fairmont Maldives, Sirru Fen Fushi has opened a Sustainability Lab, the first of its kind in the Maldives, which turns plastic waste into bespoke souvenirs, furniture and supplies for local schools. The lab also recycles discarded “ghost nets” by braiding them into bracelets and luggage tags. The luxury resort’s sustainability manager, Samuel Dixon, says there is a huge rise in the number of eco-conscious travelers, particularly in the luxury hospitality market. The resort also has a coral garden for local wildlife, a variety of overwater and beach villas, and a kids’ club that includes visits to the Sustainability Lab and the Coralarium.
