Uzbekistan extends president's term limit through referendum.

Uzbekistan has passed a package of constitutional amendments that will allow President Shavkat Mirziyoyev to run for two more 7-year terms, potentially remaining in power until 2040. The reform resets his term count and was adopted with 90.21% of the vote in a referendum with a reported 85% voter turnout. While Mirziyoyev has spearheaded multiple reforms in the country, including a crackdown on forced labor in cotton fields and criminalizing domestic violence, activists allege that rights abuses continue and authorities are not allowing the emergence of an opposition.
