Sierra Leone Holds Tense Elections with Peaceful Deployment of Polling Agents and Materials.
Sierra Leone is set to hold Presidential, Parliamentary, and Local Council Elections on June 24, 2023, with over three million voters expected to cast their ballots. The country experienced a standoff on June 21 when supporters of the main opposition party, the All Peoples Congress (APC), staged a peaceful protest, resulting in one fatality. The Electoral Commission of Sierra Leone (ECSL) confirmed that the elections would proceed as planned, with a total of 3,374,258 ballot sheets delivered. Political parties, including the APC, are currently training their polling agents to be deployed at various polling stations nationwide. The international community expressed concern about the recent violence and called upon both parties to uphold peace and demonstrate tolerance towards one another.
