Impeachment Proceedings Initiated Against Georgia's President for EU Visits

Georgia's ruling party, Georgian Dream, plans to initiate impeachment proceedings against President Salome Zourabichvili for her visits to the European Union without government approval. The party leader, Irakli Kobakhidze, accused Zourabichvili of violating the constitution. Zourabichvili, who has criticized Georgian Dream for being pro-Russian and not committed enough to EU and NATO membership, met with German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and was scheduled to meet European Council President Charles Michel to garner support for Georgia's EU candidate status. Impeachment is unlikely to succeed as Georgian Dream lacks the necessary votes from opposition parties.
