Hans-Georg Maassen, the former head of Germany's Office for the Protection of the Constitution, is now being monitored by the security agency he once led, after becoming known for increasingly radical commentary on immigration and setting up a party to capture disenchanted voters. His post-BfV career as a far-right icon has been an embarrassment to Germany's security services, as they contend with a growing far-right scene. Maassen's surveillance by the BfV comes after he was dismissed in 2018 for downplaying the threat of right-wing extremists.
