Former South African President Jacob Zuma, who was returned to prison to comply with a court ruling that his release on ill health was unlawful, was freed after just an hour under a remission process aimed at addressing overcrowding in jails. Zuma, who had initially been released on medical parole in September 2021, began serving a 15-month prison sentence in July of that year for contempt of court. The decision to release him on medical parole was later deemed unlawful by the Court of Appeal.
