EU Leaders Face Ongoing Rifts and Opposition on Migration Policies

Hungary and Poland have once again blocked an EU joint declaration, this time at an informal summit in Granada, Spain, by opposing the section focused on migration. This follows their previous obstruction of a communiqué in June related to the New Pact on Migration and Asylum. The New Pact, currently under negotiation, aims to establish a system of "mandatory solidarity" among EU member states for the management and reception of asylum seekers. The recent blockage has resulted in the omission of any reference to migration in the summit's declaration, which instead addresses economic issues. Despite the setback, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen remains optimistic about the New Pact's progress.
