Arab League considers Syria's return amidst shifting Mideast diplomacy.

Delegates from nine Arab nations, including six Gulf Cooperation Council countries, are meeting in Saudi Arabia to discuss the possibility of normalizing relations with Syria and its return to the Arab League. Syria was suspended from the Arab League after a crackdown on pro-democracy protests in 2011. Saudi Arabia, which has long resisted normalization with Syria, said a new approach was needed with Damascus after a rapprochement with Iran, Syria’s key regional ally. Any recommendation to reinstate Syria in the 22-member Arab League is likely to draw protests from Western capitals.
