Wildfire Forces Evacuations in Western Spain

Some 700 people have been evacuated from four small towns in western Spain due to a wildfire that has burned around 8,000 hectares of land. Officials suspect the fire was started intentionally as two separate blazes erupted almost simultaneously. Last year, Spain recorded its worst year of fire destruction since 1994, with 267,000 hectares burned. The country accounted for 35% of all burnt land in European wildfires last year. Nearly 30% of Spain is now in a drought "emergency" or "alert."
