UN Urges Immediate Ceasefire in Israel-Hamas Conflict

The United Nations General Assembly overwhelmingly passed a non-binding resolution calling for an immediate humanitarian truce between Israel and Hamas, as well as demanding aid access to Gaza and the protection of civilians. The resolution received 120 votes in favor, with 45 abstentions and 14 votes against, including from Israel and the United States. The resolution carries political weight and sends a message for the war to stop and for humanitarian assistance to enter Gaza. The Security Council had failed four times to take action. Israel's U.N. Ambassador rejected the resolution, accusing those who voted in favor of supporting "the defense of Nazi terrorists" instead of Israel. The General Assembly also stressed the importance of preventing further destabilization and escalation of violence in the region.
