The Taliban has released 84-year-old Austrian far-right activist Herbert Fritz, who was arrested in Afghanistan last May on suspicion of spying. The Austrian government confirmed his release in Doha, Qatar, with mediation by the Qatari government. Fritz, a founding member of Austria's National Democratic Party, was reportedly researching a book in Afghanistan. The far-right Freedom Party in Austria, which leads in opinion polls, had pressed for his release, while the Documentation Centre of Austrian Resistance described Fritz as an active participant in extreme-right political circles.
