US Cuts Economic Ties with Uganda Due to Human Rights Abuses

President Joe Biden has announced plans to terminate economic ties with Uganda and several other African nations due to "gross violations" of human rights. The decision comes after Uganda implemented an anti-homosexuality bill, leading to increased discrimination and persecution of the LGBTQ+ community. The US policy, known as the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA), aims to promote economic growth in African countries but requires compliance with human rights criteria. Biden stated that Uganda, along with the Central African Republic, Gabon, and Niger, failed to address US concerns about their non-compliance, leading to the termination of their AGOA eligibility.
