Rising Death Toll: Journalists Under Fire in Gaza

The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) has expressed deep concern over the unprecedented number of media professionals killed while doing their jobs in 2023, with Israel's war with Hamas claiming more journalists than any conflict in over 30 years. So far this year, 94 journalists have been killed and nearly 400 others imprisoned, up from 67 deaths in the same period last year. The IFJ called for better protection for media workers and accountability for their attackers, highlighting the need for a new global standard for their protection. The organization also deplored media deaths in Ukraine, Afghanistan, the Philippines, India, China, and Bangladesh, and urged governments to shed light on these crimes and ensure the safety of journalists.
