Shanghai's population fell in 2022 for the first time in five years, with 24.76 million people compared to 24.89 million in 2021, due to COVID-19 lockdowns and migrant workers leaving. China's population fell for the first time in six decades, with rising living costs, weak economic growth, and changing attitudes towards raising a family. Shanghai's birth rate dropped to 4.4 per 1,000 people, while its death rate increased to 6.0 per 1,000 people due to an ageing population. Political advisers have made more than 20 recommendations to boost birth rates.
