"Death Sentence for Arsonist Who Killed 36 at Japanese Anime Studio"

A Japanese court has sentenced Shinji Aoba to death for the arson attack on Kyoto Animation's studio in 2019, which resulted in the deaths of 36 people and injuries to many others. Aoba, who was not an employee of the studio, carried out the attack as an act of revenge, believing the company had stolen his novel submissions. The court found him mentally capable and stated that he had premeditated the crime. The attack was described as turning the studio into "hell" and causing indescribable pain. Aoba, who was severely burned and hospitalized for 10 months, was also found to have plotted a separate attack on a train station.
