Claudia Sheinbaum, the former mayor of Mexico City and a close ally of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, has been chosen as the ruling Morena party's candidate for the upcoming presidential elections in June 2023. This decision brings Mexico closer to electing its first female president. Sheinbaum, who beat former Foreign Affairs Secretary Marcelo Ebrard in party surveys, enjoys a distinct advantage as Morena's candidate. The opposition coalition has also selected a female candidate, Xóchitl Gálvez. Sheinbaum, an environmental scientist, has pledged to commit Mexico to sustainability and has shown independence in handling the Covid-19 pandemic.
