Mysterious Respiratory Illness Sweeps Across US, Prompting Concern for Dogs

Veterinary laboratories in several states, including Oregon, Colorado, and New Hampshire, are investigating an unusual respiratory illness in dogs that causes lasting illness and does not respond to antibiotics. Symptoms include coughing, sneezing, nasal or eye discharge, and lethargy. The Oregon Department of Agriculture has documented over 200 cases since mid-August and is working with researchers to determine the cause. While some dogs have died, the exact number is unknown. Pet owners are advised to ensure their dogs are up to date on vaccines and to decrease contact with other dogs as a precaution.
