Mysterious respiratory illness spreads among dogs in the US

Veterinary laboratories in several U.S. states are investigating an unusual respiratory illness in dogs, causing lasting respiratory disease and pneumonia that does not respond to antibiotics. Symptoms include coughing, sneezing, nasal or eye discharge, and lethargy. The Oregon Department of Agriculture has documented over 200 cases since mid-August and is working with researchers to identify the cause. While the number of deaths is unclear, pet owners are advised to ensure their dogs are up to date on vaccinations and take precautions to limit contact with other dogs. Labs across the country are collaborating to find the source of the illness.
