Mysterious Dog Illness Sweeps Across US, Raising Concerns

Veterinary laboratories in several states are investigating a mysterious respiratory illness in dogs that has caused lasting respiratory disease and pneumonia, with symptoms including coughing, sneezing, nasal or eye discharge, and lethargy. The illness does not respond to antibiotics and has resulted in deaths, although the exact number is unknown. The Oregon Department of Agriculture has documented over 200 cases since mid-August and is working with researchers to identify the cause. Dog owners are advised to ensure their pets are up to date on vaccines and decrease contact with other dogs.
