Flu Cases Surge Nationwide, RSV Takes Toll on Children

The United States is experiencing sustained increases in flu activity, particularly in Southeastern states, with at least 780,000 people sick, 8,000 hospitalizations, and 490 deaths reported so far this season. The predominant strain is H1N1, but other strains are also circulating. The flu shot is expected to be effective against the circulating strains. Additionally, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is hitting children hard, with higher than usual cases reported earlier in the season. RSV is causing congestion, coughing, and wheezing, particularly in children with underlying health conditions. There is a shortage of a new drug, Beyfortus, meant to prevent RSV infection. COVID-19 cases are plateauing but remain widespread, and experts are recommending continued mask usage to reduce the risk of viral illnesses.
