"Emerging COVID Variants Pirola and Eris Spark Global Concerns"

Israel has identified a new COVID-19 variant, BA.2.86, nicknamed "Pirola," which contains numerous previously unseen mutations. The variant was first detected in an elderly patient who had not traveled outside the country. Since then, additional cases have been reported globally. The significance and level of concern surrounding the variant remain uncertain, but there has been a surge in COVID-19 cases in Israel, with a 30% increase in daily confirmed cases and a doubling of severe patients requiring hospitalization in the last month. Similar trends are observed globally, with a rise in COVID-19-related emergency room visits in the US and increasing cases in Europe and Asia. The effectiveness of the new vaccines against the Pirola variant is still being investigated.
